Chapter Nineteen

~

A s expected, Whit was not on the list of those accepted into the College of Magic. Deechie called him in on Threeday to discuss his academic program. The meeting didn’t need to happen since he would get his real guidance from the College of Engineering. His appointment with an Engineering advisor was scheduled for Fourday in the administration building. He would have to ask the front desk who his professor would be.

“You fell short last Fiveday,” Deechie said with a sneer on his face. “So, I suppose it’s another term with the gnomes.”

Whit almost winced at the disgust in Deechie’s voice. “Yes. I doubt if I’ll be testing again,” Whit said.

“Finally, a few syllables of reason from your mud elf mouth.”

Whit stood. “I think I’ve had enough counseling for the day. I’ve got an appointment tomorrow with a gnomish professor to register for the next term.”

“Good enough for me. You are excused.”

Whit decided he didn’t need an excuse and turned around and left the room without another word. He climbed the stairs to his flat and took a deep breath.

What an awful man. He knew all humans weren’t like that since he had met other human professors who were friendly to him, even after figuring out he was a mixed breed.

He arrived on time with a notebook, having written down his priority classes for the second term of the first year. Whit knocked on the door, but no one answered.

“Looking for me?” Laring Gambol asked.

“I am if you are to help me with my second term schedule.”

“I am.” Laring opened the door and let Whit through first, closing the door behind them.

“Sit down,” Gambol said. “I heard your father died unexpectedly during new year’s break. I am sorry. I was out of town until Firstday.”

“How did you hear?” Whit asked.

Laring nodded his head. “There is a faculty broadsheet. There is a section for weddings, births, and funerals of university staff. It was there. Just an announcement that your father had been interred at the university cemetery and the date. It had to be unexpected since you were looking forward to seeing him at the break.”

“Someone set fire to his cottage. Father didn’t survive.”

“A sky elf not surviving a fire?” Gambol frowned.

“It was in the middle of the night. He was sleeping, I guess.”

Gambol put up his hand. “I won’t ask any more questions. I’m sure your feelings are still raw.”

“They are, but I’m overcoming them.”

“Like how you are overcoming your magic college rejection?”

“You know everything?” Whit said.

“We gnomes always do a little research on our students before meeting before a term. I was surprised you showed up in two places. How do you feel about the rejection?”

“Deechie, the flat monitor, told me I wouldn’t be accepted. I would have except for my heritage.”

Gambol bit his lower lip. “You would have except for Deechie. I know one of the other professors on your panel. Greeb had a commitment from one of the professors to reject you.”

“The woman,” Whit said.

“No, the other man.
